Behind the Scenes at ColdSnap: A Chat with Steve Sims, Director of Food Safety and Quality
At ColdSnap, we’re all about making the best frozen treats on the planet—whether it’s ice cream, something a little healthier, or more spirited. But behind every swirl is a dedicated team working hard to make sure our products are not just tasty but also safe and top-notch. We sat down with Steve Sims, our Director of Food Safety and Quality, to talk about what goes into keeping ColdSnap at the top of its game.
A Year of Growth: Bigger, Better, and More Ice Cream
The last year at ColdSnap has been all about growth. We’ve expanded our facility, brought in new machinery, and launched even more production lines to keep up with demand. For Steve and the Food Safety team, that means staying ahead of the game and making sure everything we produce is 100% safe and up to the highest standards. “We’ve been focused on implementing the right systems and making sure we’re ready for the expansion,” Steve shared. “We’re growing, and with that comes the challenge of keeping everything running smoothly and safely.”

SQF Certification: Our Seal of Quality
One of the biggest achievements for ColdSnap’s Food Safety and Quality team was earning our SQF (Safe Quality Food) Certification in 2024. This global certification is a big deal in the food world and is proof that we’re serious about safety, quality, and consistency. “Getting our SQF certification was a major milestone,” Steve said. “It shows our customers that we’re doing things the right way. It’s not just about meeting standards; it’s about going above and beyond to make sure what you’re eating is safe and of the highest quality.”
Investing in People and Processes
A key part of ColdSnap’s commitment to quality is investing in the right people and the right processes. Since joining the company, Steve has expanded his team, bringing in experts to ensure we keep food safety at the forefront as we grow. “We’re producing more complex products, and our team has grown to keep up with that,” Steve explained. “It’s all about continuous improvement—whether it’s the systems we use or the amazing people we have on the team.”
The ColdSnap Magic: Shelf-Stable, Safe, and Delicious
What really sets ColdSnap apart is our ability to produce shelf-stable products—ice cream that doesn’t need to be frozen and treats that don’t need refrigeration. Thanks to our innovative heat treatment process, we’re able to create products that stay safe and delicious at room temperature. “Our heat treatment process is similar to what’s used for canned soups,” Steve explained. “It’s a simple but effective way of making sure our products are completely safe to store outside of the fridge, while still delivering that high-quality taste that ColdSnap is known for.” This process allows us to deliver fresh, effortless ice cream without the worry of spoilage—perfect for enjoying ColdSnap wherever, whenever.

A Range of Products, A Range of Challenges
What Steve loves most about his role at ColdSnap is the variety of products we offer. From classic ice creams to our boozy treats, each product has its own unique set of challenges when it comes to food safety. “We’re doing things that no one else has done before,” Steve said. “Every product is different, and each comes with its own challenges in terms of food safety regulations. It’s exciting to be a part of something so innovative.”
Steve’s Go-To Flavor: Salted Caramel (No Contest)
When we asked Steve about his favorite ColdSnap flavor, there was no hesitation. “Salted Caramel, no question,” he said with a grin. “It’s just the best. I’m a scientist, so I should know.”
Beyond ColdSnap: Sailing Into the Weekend
When he’s not making sure ColdSnap treats meet the highest food safety standards, Steve is all about sailing. “New England is perfect for it,” he said. “I love racing around Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Newport. It’s a great way to unwind and get some fresh air.”
Wrapping Up: ColdSnap’s Commitment to Quality, From Start to Finish
At ColdSnap, we’re all about delivering the best experience for our customers. From the moment we mix the ingredients to the second you take your first bite, every step of the process is designed with quality and safety in mind. Thanks to Steve and his team, we’re able to bring you delicious frozen treats that are safe, innovative, and fun. Stay tuned for more updates as ColdSnap continues to grow, evolve, and keep making frozen treat magic.
